TOPIC 1 : GETTING READY TO LEARN

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN STUDYING IN SCHOOL VS STUDYING IN UNIVERSITY
The transition from high school to university is a big difference such as culture , new friends, new attitude. Now you are spreading your wings, finding some new independence, and discovering new abilities and talents. University's life will make you be the new one and show your real attitude because you are far away from your family.

1) You will manage your own time

In high school, they have timetable for study such as prep and you will spent your 35 hour per week in class. Teachers in school will give you test and practice to make you ready for your real exam. Your time at school is already managed,if you come late at school you still can go for your classes.

In university, you free to do what you want. if you want get a great result you can ask your lecture personally because lecture will not teach all in the classes. They want see your effort, but if you want get a bad result you can do what you want , lecture will not ask you to study or find them . In college, you need to manage your time perfectly to avoid from waste the time.

2)  You could have more than one assignment or midterm on the same day

In high school, your teachers most likely worked closely together to ensure that all of your assignments and tests were spread out throughout the year. If you have 2 or 3 test , your teacher will rearranged their dates to avoid conflicts.

In University, your professor creates their syllabus and the dates are set. You will always have  multiple assignments on the same day or midterms on the same day. so make sure you arrange your time correctly.

3) Each assignment, midterm and final exam is worth more

Knowing this, make sure you give yourself enough studying time to get the grade you want. Extra credit assignments are also very, very rare.

8 steps to university success

  • Attend all classes
  • Become an active learner
  • Participate in class
  • Get to know your lecturers
  • Form study groups with friends
  • Be receptive to change
  • Stay up to date with your work
  • Study smart every sem

LEARNING STYLE

I am a visual learner, I've learn by reading or seeing pictures. I understand and remember things by sight. I can picture what I've learning in my head.

Activity 1: Identify your learning style

How would you change your learning style?

  • Read a book
  • Focusing in a class with all learning style ( visual , auditory , kinesthetic )
  • hearing some songs to increase your auditory.

TOPIC 7 : ACADEMIC INTEGRITY PERFORMANCE

Content

  • Plagiarism
  • Types of plagiarism
  • How to prevent Plagiarism
  • Calculating GPA

1) What is Plagiarism ?

   - plagiarism is someone taking someone else's work or ideas without use the original credit author and say it from their own ideas.

2) Types of Plagiarism

  • Turning in someone else' work as your own.
  • Failing to put a quotation in quotation marks\
  • Changing words but copying the sentences without giving a credit
  • copy so many words or ideas from a sources almost in your assignment, whether you give credit or not.
  • giving incorrect information about the sources of a quotation

3) How To Prevent Plagiarism ?

    - You must avoided through citing the original sources.

   - Planning
  • Ask your lecturer
  • Plan your paper
  • Write some notes

   - Writing
  • Know how to paragraph
  • Evaluate your resources
  • Include a reference page

What is CGPA ?

  - CGPA ( Cumulative Grade Point Average refers to overall GPA in every semester, which includes dividing the number of quality  points earned in all courses attempted by the total credit hour.

ACTIVITY 1

1.      Calculate the GPA for Amelia Ameer for her first semester:
Course and Grade (1st Semester)
Course Point Average
Comparative Animal Physiology: 3 credits, earned grade of B+
3.33 x 3
= 9.99
Biochemistry I: 4 credits, earned grade of C-
1.67 x 4
= 6.68
Integrated Physiology Lab: 1 credit, earned grade of A
4.00 x 1
= 4
Asian Civilization I: 3 credits, earned grade of C-
1.67 x 3
= 5.01
Ecology: 3 credits, earned grade of A
4.00 x 3
= 12
Korean I: 3 credits, earned grade of B
3.00 x 3
= 3
 Total Number of Credits =
 3 + 4 + 1 + 3 + 3 + 3
= 17
Total Points Earned =
 9.99 +6.68 + 4+ 5.01 + 12 + 9
= 46.68
GPA =
46.68 ÷ 17
= 2.75

2. Calculate what would have happened if Amelia had earned a B in Chemistry.

     3.00 x 4 = 12.00

     Total points =   46.68 - 6.68 + 12.00 = 52.00

     GPA =  52.00 ÷ 17
              = 3.06

3. What is the different in GPA ?

     3.06 - 2.75 = 0.31

her GPA will increase from 2.75 to 3.06

4.      Now calculate Amelia GPA for the next semester:

Course and Grade (2nd Semester)
Course Point Average
Cell Biology: 4 credits, earned grade of B+
 3.33 x 4
= 13.32
Organic Chemistry I: 4 credits, earned grade of B
3.00 x 4
= 12.00
Intro Physics I: 4 credits, earned grade of C
 2.00 x 4
= 8.00
Writing in Biology: 3 credits, earned grade of C
2.00 x 3
= 6.00
Public Speaking: 3 credits, earned grade of A-
 3,67 x 3
= 11.01
Total Number of Credits =
 4 + 4 + 4 + 3 + 3
= 18
Total Points Earned =
 13.32 + 12 + 8 + 6 + 11.01
= 50.33
GPA =
 50.33 ÷ 18
= 2.80

5.    What would happen if Amelia had received a D in Cell Bio instead of the B+?
    Cell Bio = 4 x 1.00
                   = 4.00

    Total points earned = 50.33 - 13.22 + 4.00
                                     = 41.01

    GPA = 41.01
              18
              =  2.28

6.   What is the difference in GPA?
    2.80 - 2.28 = 0.52

The GPA of of Amelia decrease from 2.80 to 2.28

7.     What is the difference in CGPA?

     CGPA = 46.68 + 50.33
                              18 + 17
                = 2.77

     CGPA = 46.68 + 41.01
                                18 + 17

e       = 2.77 - 2.51
         = 0.26

d
 8.   What does Amelia have to do in order to achieve a GPA of 3.00 in the 2nd semester if her CGPA          falls below 2.50 in the 1st semester?
 - Amelia have to achieve at least B in every subject, she took in second semester

TOPIC 6 : TAKING LECTURE NOTES

WHAT IS TAKING LECTURER NOTES?

- Taking lecture notes means we write down every word from lecturer and read it with our own word and ideas. It can also use for our revision and preparation before the exam.

HOW TO TAKE LECTURER NOTES ?

- Become an active listener

Read a text assignment before class

Identify a main idea of the text

HOW DO I PREPARE FOR CLASS ?

Read the topic first before you enter the class

- Focus on topic that you weak

- Make some question to ask the lecturer in class.

Effective Note Taking System

  • Cornell Method

If you using this method, you will easily to understand the notes lecturer gives. After the class, you can write the main ideas in the Cue column and you can write again what you have learn in the class in summary column.

  • Mapping Method

Mapping method is the best way for students are lazy to read a notes and last minutes prepared. Just draw whatever you want and write the point inside the form.

There are many kind of method you can use to write notes beside the cornell method and mapping method.

  • Block Method
  • Modified Block Method
  • Informer outline

Reviewing Notes

  • Recite from the heading
  • Recite from the recall question.
  • talk about the information with others
